Medical Marijuana Bill To Be Considered in Louisiana

Twenty states have now legalized the medical use of marijuana for treatment of glaucoma, cancer, diabetes and chronic pain condition. Could Louisiana be the next state on that list?

According to NOLA defender,
A bill that would clear the way for medical marijuana in Louisiana is set to be considered by the state Senate's Health and Welfare Committee Wednesday. SB 541, offered by Sen. Fred Mills (R-New Iberia), would allow neurologists, oncologists, and ophthalmologists to prescribe therapeutic cannabis "for the treatment of a qualifying medical condition."

The bill restricts some people from obtaining medical marijuana, including those who have served more than a year in jail on violent crime, drug or sex charges. Additionally, the measure would create the Therapeutic Marijuana Utilization Review Board to regulate the drug.
Gov. Bobby Jindal said in January that he's open to medical marijuana if the use is "tightly controlled." The gov hasn't weighed in on Mills' bill specifically.
The Louisiana Sheriffs Association and Louisiana District Attorneys Association are poised to come out against the bill. Those two groups turned out in force earlier this legislative session to oppose a measure that would have reduced medical marijuana penalties.
